Tilley, Virginia

Professor, Democracy & Governance
Southern Illinois University Carbondale

I work primarily on the politics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including studies of Palestinian and Zionist political histories. In the last decade I've given particular attention to how the conflict has been periodically reinterpreted through the twentieth century in international law and diplomacy. This work extends to contemporary politics of the Mashreq, including UN engagement and US foreign policy regarding the Sykes-Picot states. My published work includes my monograph book, The One-State Solution (Michigan, 2005), and a co-authored volume in which I served also as editor, Beyond Occupation: Apartheid, Colonialism and International Law in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (Pluto 2012). I am co-author, with Richard Falk, of the commissioned 2017 UN ESCWA report examining whether Israel's practices regarding the Palestinian people are consistent with the international legal definition of apartheid. At SIU, I teach courses in international relations and comparative politics, with special thematic focus on the historical construction of national, racial and ethnic identities. I have a second field in Latin American studies (indigenous peoples' politics), as well as six years of research experience in South Africa and three years in Fiji (in the south Pacific).
