Session R4732 (AATT Roundtable: Focus on the Learner), 2017
The disappointing state of enrollments in Turkish language courses at US institutions of higher education has been a steady source of concern and puzzlement. I will talk about the student profiles for Turkish and Ottoman Turkish which I have collected over the years as each student had to fill out a form first day of class. I will also talk about the various attempts made by our association, the American Association of Teachers of Turkic Languages, early discussions of the issue among members, as well as meetings I initiated among Ivy League school colleagues in the field to collectively think of and consider ways to improve the situation.
