Abyad, Abir

Teacher Assistant (Arabic), Middle Eastern&South Asia Languages & Cult

I immigrated to the United States from Syria in 2008, having been born and raised in Damascus to Palestinian refugees. There, after graduating from high school, I spent about fifteen years working in the women’s fashion industry, starting as a retail sales associate with a European brand, then moving to a local clothing manufacturer, beginning as an assistant manager, and ending my tenure as the firm’s general manager for the last six years. I was responsible for all executive aspects of running that business (helped along the way by many professional training courses that I attended outside a university setting). After my immigration to the U.S., I returned to school at the local community college, earning an automatic transfer to the University of Virginia, where I graduated with highest-distinction honors. Now, I am teaching Arabic to undergraduate students in addition to my studying.
