CAMES Summer Arabic Programs

CAMES Summer Arabic Programs

The Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies (CAMES) at the American University of Beirut will offer two intensive Arabic language programs in the summer of 2018: 1) The Arabic Language and Culture Program, and 2) The Lebanese Colloquial Arabic Program. Both programs will run from June 20 until August 8, 2018 and the application deadline for both is April 10, 2018.

The program in Arabic Language and Culture offers eight different levels of proficiency from Novice to Superior. The program focuses on development of all language skills and provides instruction that integrates both Standard Arabic and Lebanese Colloquial Arabic within each course. The program offers five contact hours per day and features lectures, movies, field trips, and clubs which represent an integral part of the program. Students should expect around four hours of homework per day. The program uses the al-Kitaab textbook series by Brustad, Al-Batal, and Al-Tonsi as well as other teaching materials, some developed by CAMES faculty.

The program in Lebanese Colloquial Arabic offers two levels of instruction (novice and intermediate) and focuses on the development of speaking and listening skills in particular for those interested in developing their skills in the spoken Arabic of Lebanon and Lebanese culture. Applicants at the novice level are not expected to have any prior knowledge of Arabic. The Lebanese Colloquial Arabic program uses teaching materials developed by CAMES as well as Lebanese films, songs, and other audiovisual materials.

Both programs offer students 9 AUB credit hours which can be transferred to their home institutions. Instructors teaching in both programs are professional language teachers with extensive training and experience teaching Arabic as a second language.

Admitted students in both programs (except those admitted to the novice levels) will be required to take a placement exam aimed at placing them within a class appropriate to their level of proficiency.

The American University of Beirut was founded in 1866 and follows the American liberal arts model of higher education. Located in Ras Beirut, AUB campus offers panoramic views of the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea and close proximity to Beirut’s main attractions.
