Assistant Professor of German (with teaching in Arabic)


The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (MLLC) at Wofford College, Spartanburg, South Carolina, invites applications for a Tenure-track Assistant Professor of German to begin fall, 2019.

MLLC is one of the largest departments at the College, with twelve dedicated, full-time professors teaching in five distinct language programs of Arabic, Chinese, French, German, and Spanish, who enjoy a supportive and convivial work environment. For more information on MLLC, please visit

Wofford’s faculty teaching load is 3/1/3. The Assistant Professor of German will teach first-through fourth-year German language, literature, and culture courses, and work collaboratively in the growing German program within the MLLC department and throughout the campus. The incumbent will also teach one course in either the Arabic/MENA or French program (at least 18 graduate credit hours required to teach in the respective language), and/or a course in English within the General Education framework, such as a first-year Humanities course.

Wofford faculty are teacher-scholars with a high aptitude and interest in undergraduate teaching and advising, community outreach, and a commitment to the liberal arts. Preference will be provided for candidates having multiple teaching experiences in graduate school or one or more years at the college level. Graduate coursework on teaching and/or additional pedagogical training through workshops or certificates are also valuable. Creativity, self-motivation, proficiency in the use of technology, and an interest in community outreach will assist in being successful in this role. To earn tenure, faculty are expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching, continued scholarly development, and service to the college.

A PhD in German, equivalent, or closely related field, as well as minimally 1 year of teaching experience, and fluency in German and English are required.
