Assistant Professor of Arabic Language and Culture

The Department of Culture and Language Studies, Renison University College, affiliated with the University of Waterloo, invites applications for one tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. An appointment date of July 1, 2020 is expected. The Assistant Professor will teach undergraduate Arabic language courses in the department’s Studies in Islam program (soon to be renamed Studies in Islamic and Arab Cultures), as well as courses on Arab culture (preferably Arab literature, drama, fine arts, film, history, and/or popular culture).

We are seeking candidates with a Ph.D. in Arabic, Arab Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, or a related field. The successful candidate will have native or near-native Arabic proficiency; demonstrate experience and excellence in teaching Arabic to speakers of other languages (from beginners to advanced students); have a track record of scholarship; and have an established research program. TASOL certification, experience in curriculum and program development, the potential to provide leadership in the Studies in Islamic and Arab Cultures program, and ability to teach other Middle Eastern languages (e.g. Turkish, Farsi) are assets.

The successful candidate will be expected to work closely and collaboratively with the Chair of Culture and Language Studies, to participate in academic activities of the department and college, and play an active role in cultivating partnerships on-campus and in the wider community through outreach activities and events.

Renison University College offers a minor in Studies in Islam and diplomas in Arabic. Studies in Islam (Studies in Islamic and Arab Cultures) is a multi-disciplinary program, anchored by Arabic language instruction, which enhances students’ understanding of cultural, religious, and historical aspects of Arab and Muslim-majority societies, and the experiences of Arabs and Muslims worldwide. It is not necessary that the successful candidate focus on Islam in their teaching and research.
