Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Modern Islam

Fordham University, Department of Theology, invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship, beginning Fall 2020, in the field of Modern Islam. We seek a scholar who combines scholarly research in one or more sub-specialties with the ability to engage in humanistic inquiry about religious thought and practice in the modern world. The department is eager to consider candidates working on a range of modern Islamic traditions and communities, geographical region open, and in a range of methodologies (including but not limited to ethics, constructive religious thought, and historical study).

Teaching responsibilities include graduate courses and mentoring of doctoral students, as well as undergraduate general education, upper level courses for majors, and elective courses. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching in the Core Curriculum, the department’s undergraduate programs for majors and minors, and the department’s graduate programs, as well as to a variety of Fordham research centers and cognate departments, including the Middle East Studies Program, the Religious Studies Program, the Institute for International Humanitarian Affairs, the International Studies Program, the American Studies Program, the Department of African and African-American Studies, and the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program (among others).

Ph.D. required. Competitive compensation; ordinary teaching load is five courses per year; generous leave policy. From those candidates who advance beyond the initial screening, the department will request a representative example of scholarly work (e.g., unpublished research paper, published article or book chapter), evidence of teaching effectiveness, transcripts, and three letters of reference.
