Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences

Founded in 1919 as an English-language university based on high standards of conduct and scholarship, American University in Cairo (AUC) is a vibrant institution that contributes to the intellectual growth, discipline and character of the future leaders of Egypt and the region. AUC emphasizes a liberal arts education, with all undergraduate students studying a common set of courses in the humanities and the natural and social sciences as part of the University’s Core Curriculum. Ranked as one of the top 30 universities in the Arab region by U.S. News and World Report, AUC is proud to have programs in arts and humanities; business, management, and accounting; and social sciences ranked in the top ten regionally.

At the cornerstone of education at AUC is the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HUSS), which places a liberal arts education in a global context that promotes innovation and civic engagement. HUSS is central to AUC’s mission and its largest school. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences consists of nine departments: Applied Linguistics; Arab and Islamic Civilizations; Arts; English and Comparative Literature; History; Philosophy; Political Science; Psychology; and Sociology, Egyptology and Anthropology. The School’s near 100 faculty members and 60 staff support over 600 undergraduate and nearly 200 graduate students. HUSS is committed to fostering international diversity, cross-cultural learning, and global exchange within the school; 28% of the faculty hail from Egypt and 72% are from the United States and other countries. HUSS also boasts a world-class faculty who maintain discipline-based expertise across a range of fields, produce groundbreaking research, and provide the finest liberal arts education in the region. Many faculty members, including distinguished visiting scholars, are both internationally and regionally recognized for outstanding scholarship.
