At the cornerstone of education at AUC is the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HUSS), which places a liberal arts education in a global context that promotes innovation and civic engagement. HUSS is central to AUC’s mission and its largest school. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences consists of nine departments: Applied Linguistics; Arab and Islamic Civilizations; Arts; English and Comparative Literature; History; Philosophy; Political Science; Psychology; and Sociology, Egyptology and Anthropology. The School’s near 100 faculty members and 60 staff support over 600 undergraduate and nearly 200 graduate students. HUSS is committed to fostering international diversity, cross-cultural learning, and global exchange within the school; 28% of the faculty hail from Egypt and 72% are from the United States and other countries. HUSS also boasts a world-class faculty who maintain discipline-based expertise across a range of fields, produce groundbreaking research, and provide the finest liberal arts education in the region. Many faculty members, including distinguished visiting scholars, are both internationally and regionally recognized for outstanding scholarship.
Reporting directly to the Provost, the Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences is the chief academic and administrative leader for the School and serves as an essential member of university leadership. The Dean will set the strategic direction for HUSS, with the responsibility for advancing the mission and operations through thoughtful personnel decisions, general administration and management, creative budgeting and resource management, academic program support, and fundraising. The Dean will promote excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, including the development of collaborative academic programs, while creating opportunities for more robust research. The successful candidate must intrinsically understand and promote the value of a liberal arts education. The Dean will effectively articulate the importance of the liberal arts to the future of an international university and demonstrate a commitment to developing the excellence of its faculty, including recruiting and supporting promising students. The successful candidate will also possess experience in academic administration and have demonstrated scholarly excellence in a relevant field. Preferred candidates will have credentials consistent with an appointment as Full Professor with tenure.
