Regions of expertise may include Europe and North America, the Middle East and Africa, South, South East, or Central Asia; and methodology and approach are open. We welcome candidates whose research interests include religious, social, and political thought in the contemporary Muslim world; Islam's interactions with various political economies and cultures; and the relationships between Islam, politics, and democracy. Specialization could address Islamic law (e.g., family law or constitutionalism), theology and political philosophy (e.g., Islamic democracy, liberalism, modernism, or fundamentalism), nationalism, transnationalism, colonial and postcolonial legacies and identities, economic development, gender and sexuality, or religious and ethnic minority rights.
The successful candidate will teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and will collaborate with colleagues across grounds, including those in related departments and in the Democracy Initiative (http://democracyinitiative.virginia.edu).
