Assistant Professor of Classical Islamic Philosophy, Tenure Track

The Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences at Loyola University Chicago (LUC) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, for academic year 2021-22. The department seeks applicants with expertise in Classical Islamic Philosophy. The successful candidate will be joining a department with more than 33 full-time faculty members, over 123 majors and 77 minors, and MA and PhD graduate programs. This search is part of a University-wide, multi-year hiring initiative designed to hire outstanding researchers and teachers who are reflective of our diverse student body and committed to interdisciplinarity (i.e., working with colleagues across different subfields and disciplines) and the pursuit of external grants. Of special interest are candidates who can further the University’s efforts to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion.

This position entails typically a 2+2 teaching load. Courses taught will include those at the introductory level in Philosophy in our Core Curriculum, as well as in the Upper Division undergraduate and occasionally in the graduate program. Advising and mentoring of students is expected. The successful candidate is expected to pursue a strong research program, including the pursuit of external grants.

The candidate will have a Ph.D. in Philosophy at the time of appointment. Candidates for the position must clearly demonstrate the potential for excellence in research and teaching and have a record of (or clear potential for) distinguished scholarship, grant-funded research, and student mentorship. Experience working or conducting research in the specialty area of Classical Islamic philosophy is desirable. The candidate should be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic Education.
