GLOBAL UPRISING: INSURRECTION AND REACTION: UPRISING AGAINST THE LEFT

Feb 9, 2021 / 12:30-2PM (NYC/EST Time)

We tend to think of uprising as the purview of the Left—what ‘we’ do as opposed to what ‘they’ do. And yet the last decade has seen an insurrectionist Right appropriate much of the Left’s style. Uprising today can often start with an ideological indeterminacy, around a populist refusal of sitting forms of authority, that might easily lurch rightwards. This is especially the case where sitting Leftist governments struggle to balance redistribution and political liberties. Do we think of uprising, then, simply as a political form? Or does it necessarily contain a content, the way we think of revolution as the stuff of social transformation, always a turn to the Left? What are the conceptual and analytical tools we need to confront uprising from the Right? In much of the non-Western world, this poses the question of the geopolitical—how do uprisings, their class and ideological character but also their fate, so often pivot around the interventions of imperial states (often spiralling into the conceptually distinct phenomenon that is armed civil war)? How do we think through the interplay between imperialism and popular insurrections?
