Part-Time Lecturer – Middle Eastern Studies

Position Description 

The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and the College of the University of Chicago seek an experienced teacher to work with MA students in the two-year Master’s Program in the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES). The selected candidate will teach 2 courses per year for students in the CMES MA program. Typically, one of these courses will be a stand-alone seminar in the Lecturer’s area of academic specialty and the other will be a thesis writing workshop for a group of MA students. The Lecturer will also serve as a mentor for approximately 15 MA students per year as they develop and complete their thesis projects and will work alongside University of Chicago faculty teaching the program’s core colloquium Approaches to the Study of the Middle East and the three-quarter Islamicate Civilization core sequence. Service responsibilities include participating in committee assignments and providing general career counseling for students in the program. The Lecturer will also be expected to engage in regular professional development.

The appointment will begin on September 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The initial term of appointment will be for one year, with reappointment possible following successful review. This is a part-time, benefits-eligible position.

Qualifications 

We seek applicants with prior teaching experience at the college or post-secondary level, preferably at a North American institution. Experience working with MA students or advising BA theses is desirable. Applicants are required to have completed all degree requirements for a PhD in a field related to the history, literature, culture, linguistics, religion, or philosophy of the Middle East by the start date of the appointment.

This position is contingent upon budgetary approval.
