Middle East History

The department of History at Gonzaga University in Spokane Washington invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor for a scholar of Middle East History, beginning in the fall semester of 2022. The candidate should hold a PhD in history, or the international equivalent, by July 15, 2022.

Historians focused on any aspect of the Middle East past are encouraged to apply. We are especially interested in applicants with expertise that falls between the years 500 and 1500, or in: public history, history of science, history of medicine, history of technology, economic history, cultural history. The department seeks candidates whose research, teaching, and/or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education. Preference will be given to candidates whose teaching methods and materials intentionally foster the full participation and engagement of our students, with particular attention to students with marginalized identities.

The successful candidate will offer introductory courses in world history, Middle East history, and specialized content. Faculty in history share the responsibility for teaching required historical methodology courses for majors and minors in rotation with upper division courses in respective areas of expertise. An active research agenda leading to publication in the field and significant undergraduate mentoring and advising is expected of all History Department faculty.

The History Department is a collegial campus partner; faculty cross-list courses in the interdisciplinary Women’s and Gender Studies Program, International Studies Program, Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Program, Native American Studies Program and Environmental Studies Program, as well as for the Art History Minor and Film Studies Minor. The Department also collaborates with Gonzaga’s Center for Global Engagement that houses vibrant study abroad programs and international student services. The ideal candidate will contribute to the larger campus community, as well as to the Catholic, Jesuit, humanistic mission of Gonzaga University.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in History or International Equivalent by July 15, 2022.
  • Demonstrated active research agenda in the field of Middle East History.
  • Evidence of or a commitment to teaching effectiveness, including the ability to effectively respond to the academic needs of learners from diverse backgrounds.
