The Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures (MELC) in the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies (HLS) at Indiana University, Bloomington invites applications for a tenure-track position in the modern (post-1750) social and/or political history of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA region) at the rank of assistant professor, to begin in August 2025. Responsibilities will include maintaining an active research and publication agenda and teaching four courses per academic year, including undergraduate lecture courses and graduate seminars. The teaching load for this position is two courses per semester, and teaching responsibilities encompass both undergraduate and graduate courses.
The specific region(s) or sub-region(s) of the MENA area in which candidates specialize, and applicants’ specific area(s) of scholarly focus, are open. However, a selected finalist candidate must be capable of teaching a broad range of undergraduate and graduate history courses that will introduce broad historical, trans-regional themes that will appeal widely to both majors and non-majors who are interested in study of the MENA region. Among other topics, candidates should be able to teach 20th and 21st century political and social history in the region, as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidates’ area(s) of specialty.
Basic Qualifications:
Qualified candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand by date of appointment. Candidates must demonstrate strong potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship, preferably through an established track-record of effective graduate and undergraduate teaching in the history of the Modern Middle East, as well as through a record of published or in-progress scholarship commensurate to the candidate’s professional stage.
Candidates must be able to train graduate students and advanced undergraduates in the critical use of Arabic-language historical and cultural sources, including but not limited to oral histories, archival sources, and material culture; as well as in Arabic-language historiography.
Preferred Qualifications:
Additional professional competence in one or more modern Middle Eastern languages other than Arabic is also highly desirable, but not required.
