Individual Membership

Categories

MESA membership is on a calendar-year basis, January 1 through December 31. Dues are owed each January, and are non-refundable.

A. Full Member (with voting privileges)
Fellow

for those individuals who have received a doctorate related to Middle East studies and/or have taught in Middle East studies and/or who have made a scholarly contribution to Middle East studies.

Student

for full-time graduates or undergraduates. Proof of full-time student status is required. It is expected that the student rate will be granted for no more than 10 years during the course of study.

B. Associate Member (without voting privileges)

for persons interested in the study of the Middle East but who are not actively engaged in academic pursuits.

C. Retired Membership

Those who are retired with ten consecutive years of membership in MESA qualify for the retired member category, benefiting from discounted membership dues.

D. Joint Membership

Partners of student and fellow/associate members may join the association under the joint membership category. The additional dues for the second person are $75. Joint members receive one copy of IJMES, but both partners have voting rights (if they qualify).

Benefits of Membership

Individual members receive the following benefits:

  • International Journal of Middle East Studies (IJMES)
    Published quarterly. The major scholarly journal in the field, IJMES includes articles by Middle East studies specialists and an extensive section of book reviews. Includes access to the digital version.
  • MESA Review of Middle East Studies (RoMES)
    This digital publication features articles on the state of the art, MESA presidents’ addresses, book reviews and reviews of audio-visual materials, information about online resources in Middle East studies and other information about MESA and its members.
  • Issues in Middle East Studies (IMES)
    IMES is the association's newsletter available only through membership. It includes annual meeting highlights, reports from committees, articles on trends, pedagogical issues, graduate student activities, etc. The publication is available digitally (by email and through members' myMESA accounts). A print version is available upon request; a $10 international postage fee applies for those resident abroad.
  • Discounted meeting registration fees
    Members are entitled to reduced rates for annual meeting registration, providing a savings of as much as $60 depending upon registration category.
  • Membership directory listing
    Includes a photo, biography, webpage link, and accepted abstracts for the MESA program since 2009

***highest income earner pays dues according to income; joint member pays $75; both members enjoy full membership benefits, but only one print copy of IJMES.
