Southeast Regional Middle East and Islamic Studies Society (SERMEISS)

Founded 1977. Membership: 84. Dues: $25 full; $20 associate. SERMEISS is a professional society of faculty who study or teach some aspect of the Middle East or Islamic World. The ten-state region includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Members from outside the region are welcome. Fall meetings annually and biennial spring meetings, with programs designed for three levels: specialists, non-specialists who include the region in their college teaching, and pre-collegiate faculty. Sponsors teacher-training workshops and trips abroad, and maintains a video-lending library. President:  Krista Wiegand, University of Tennessee, Knoxville; Executive Director: Calvin H Allen, Jr., Shenandoah University; Direct membership inquiries to the Executive Director.
