Response from George Washington University to November 20 Letter

Dear Dr. Bâli and Dr. Brand,

Thank you for your letter. I am responding on behalf of university leadership regarding your questions about Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP).

As you noted, SJP recently engaged in a projector demonstration at the university's Gelman Library. After an investigation, the university determined that SJP’s actions violated the university's Code of Student Conduct for not following the Gelman Building Use Guidelines and for failing to comply with reasonable directions of university officials, as SJP initially refused to comply with directives to end the projections. No charges were made based on the content of the projections.

Consistent with the university's Student Organization Handbook, Code of Student Conduct, and standardized processes through Student Rights and Responsibilities, the university imposed sanctions against SJP. We have communicated the findings with SJP and will continue to engage collaboratively with the group regarding future organizing at GW.

In addition to supporting all members of our community and addressing issues that violate university policy, the university has supported and will continue to support the right to freedom of speech and expression.

Sincerely,

Colette Coleman

Vice Provost for Student Affairs and Dean of Students
