In recognition of his exceptional service to the field of Middle East Studies,

With deep appreciation for his dedication to the advancement of scholarship and to facilitating the work of academics and professionals throughout his career and in many locations,

And for a nearly 30-year career teaching and mentoring at Clemson University, twice serving as President of the Southeast Regional Middle East and Islamic Studies Seminar; serving three terms as a board member of the American Institute for Maghrib Studies (AIMS) and one term as its President; the four years spent nurturing and re-vitalizing the Centres d’Etudes Maghrebines a Tunis (CEMAT) and increasing its profile among Tunisian scholars, and,

As Executive Director of Fulbright Morocco and at the Moroccan-American Commission for Educational and Cultural Exchange (MACECE) 2009-2018, he transformed Morocco into one of the premiere Fulbright Centers. He worked tirelessly to develop academic opportunities for his constituencies, American and Moroccan alike. By his example and through his promotion of young scholars, the multiplier effect of his outstanding service will continue to have an impact for decades to come.

It is an honor to recognize James A. Miller, a creative, dedicated and generous colleague who has built bridges of scholarship and friendship between so many.
