2013 Albert Hourani Book Award Co-Winner
We award the 2013 Hourani Book Prize to Patricia Crone for “The Nativist Prophets of Early Islamic Iran; Rural Revolt and Local Zoroastrianism”, which explores the religious beliefs of the mountain populations of eastern Iran and their interactions with Judaism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism and Islam from the Sassanian and Roman eras to the present. A study in comparative religion on an immensely learned and broad scale, enriched with observations about religio-political behavior in other times and places, this book demonstrates an eye for unexpected topics, a mind for radical revisions, great scholarly learning, and a broad comparative understanding.
