The Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo (NVIC) is pleased to announce that applications for its Fall study-abroad programmes in Arabic and Middle East Studies are now officially open.
NVIC is an academic center in the heart of Cairo administered by Leiden University. The institute’s programmes are fully accredited semesters, designed for students who wish to spend time in Egypt to learn Arabic and explore the history of the region. For the Fall 2025 programmes, we have 10 spots available to international students in BA Middle East Studies and MA Arabic Studies.
Whether you are a beginner or have prior experience with Arabic, NVIC's study-abroad programmes cater to various proficiency levels and provide a unique blend of academic learning and cultural immersion.
Students can apply for one of the following programmes:
1. BA MIDDLE EAST STUDIES PROGRAMME (30 ECTS)
The BA in Middle East Studies at NVIC is designed for second- and third-year undergraduate students in the humanities, social sciences, or related disciplines. This interdisciplinary programme seeks to enhance students' Arabic-language skills and their understanding of the region, with a particular emphasis on Egypt. The curriculum offers 8 hours a week of Arabic -language training as well as six hours of content classes (taught in English) focusing on historical, economic, and cultural issues. Arabic beginners level students can also apply.
2. MA ARABIC AND ISLAMIC STUDIES PROGRAMME (30 ECTS)
The MA in Arabic & Islamic Studies at NVIC is a rigorous and immersive language-acquisition programme, specifically tailored for advanced students of Arabic. Applicants who have completed a Bachelor’s degree in Arabic or possess an equivalent academic background are encouraged to apply. This programme is designed to enhance students' proficiency in both Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian Colloquial Arabic, refining their oral, reading, and writing abilities. Additionally, it aims to deepen students' understanding of Arabic literature, while broadening their knowledge of the social, historical, and religious dynamics shaping the Arab world, with a particular focus on Egypt.
