The Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, and the Georgetown University Lecture Fund are hosting a panel discussion with Aslı Bâli, Professor of Law at Yale Law School and President of MESA, David Cole, Professor in Law and Public Policy at Georgetown Law and former National Legal Director of ACLU, and Hassan Ahmad, principal of HMA Law Firm and Attorney for Badar Khan Suri, for a talk titled “Freedom of Speech, Trump and Campus Repression: The Case of Badar Khan Suri”
The event will take place on April 14 at 4pm in the HFSC Social Room at Georgetown University. It will be livestreamed with a substantial in-person component.
Event Description:
On March 17, Badar Khan Suri, a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown, was seized by federal agents outside of his apartment. His arrest mirrors the detention of Mahmoud Khalil at Columbia University and Rumeysa Ozturk at Tufts University. According to CNN, nearly a dozen known students and faculty members have been detained by the Trump Administration in recent weeks. Marco Rubio has confirmed that more than 300 visas and green cards have been revoked.
How can we best understand this assault on freedom of speech in the United States? Does it have historical parallels? What political and constitutional principles are at stake in this crisis? More importantly, how can concerned citizens best respond to Trump’s growing authoritarianism that has directly targeted universities and colleges, threatening their institutional independence and educational integrity?
Join us for an important panel discussion that examines what the Trump administration’s actions mean for freedom of speech in the United States.
