As China’s global footprint expands, its evolving role in the Middle East has become a subject of growing academic and policy interest. In this Book Talk, Dr. Zhang Chuchu will present insights from her new book China’s Changing Role in the Middle East: Filling a Power Vacuum?
Drawing on content analysis, qualitative interviews, and archival research, Dr. Zhang examines how China’s engagement with the Middle East has transformed in recent years and how regional and international actors have responded. Her research highlights key distinctions between China’s approach and that of established powers like the United States and the European Union, offering new perspectives on the geopolitical shifts shaping the region.
The discussion will also explore the broader implications of China’s rising economic, political, and strategic influence, contributing to debates in role theory and informing policy thinking. This talk will be of interest to scholars, students, journalists, analysts, and policymakers concerned with international relations, China’s foreign policy, and Middle Eastern studies.
In a region long defined by great power rivalries, how will China’s growing presence rewrite the rules? Join us to find out.
This event will be held via Zoom from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM (SGT) on Wednesday, 21 May 2025. Attendance is free; however, registration is required.
