Brief Description of AIMS:

The American Institute for Maghrib Studies (AIMS), a non-profit organization focused on the study of and diffusion of knowledge of North Africa, the Maghrib. Since its founding in the early 1980s, AIMS has established three overseas research centers (ORCs), promoted research and developed strong relations between U.S. and Maghribi scholars, acquired library and archival resources, and organized workshops and exchanges for U.S. and Maghribi scholars. AIMS, the sole American academic organization dedicated to the study of North Africa, operates in three countries: Tunisia at the Centre d’Études Maghrébines à Tunis (CEMAT), in Algeria at the Centre d’Études Maghrébines (CEMA), and in Morocco through the Tangier American Legation (TALIM). Each ORC has its own director and staff. After many years with a U.S. director and office at the University of Arizona, AIMS now seeks a U.S. Director who may operate from a remote location.

Job Description:
The American Institute for Maghrib Studies seeks a U.S. Director who is available to work remotely at 75%, or approximately 30 hours per week while maintaining strong communication with all stakeholders. The position will begin on a part-time schedule with the potential to grow based on organizational needs and funding. The AIMS US Director manages daily operations of the organization, including accounting, across multiple international time-zones; grant management and program administration; and regular communication with the AIMS Board, ORC Directors, the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC), and the AIMS membership. The Director maintains membership data; manages the Annual Board meeting; promotes events and programs on the listserv, the website, and through social media; leads funding agency and program reporting; manages financial affairs with the accountant and the ORCs and the regional financial liaison; and provides administrative support for all AIMS programs, including fellowship programs, awards and prizes, the AIMS annual conference, the dissertation workshop, and Board committees. The Director maintains an on-going record of all accounting activity and reports to funding agencies and officers quarterly and annually.

Key Responsibilities section:
Serve as the primary administrative and operational liaison to the President and Executive Committee of the Board of Directors and its members and committees, coordinate meeting logistics, board materials, governance records, annual calendars, and committee support to ensure effective governance.
Collaborate with the Board and ORC directors to achieve strategic goals by translating priorities into operational plans, workflows, and accountability structures that broaden programmatic reach and deepen relationships with constituents.
Support budget planning and financial oversight with the Executive Committee and accounting team.
Monitor incoming payments, receivables, refunds, and reconciliation items in coordination with finance and accounting support to ensure accurate tracking, documentation, and reporting.
Maintain vendor, supplier, platform, and external relationship records, including contracts, renewal dates, service issues, key contacts, and budget considerations.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree
5+ years of professional experience in nonprofit operations, administration, program management, or a related field
Experience working in a small nonprofit, educational organization, startup environment, or similarly entrepreneurial setting strongly preferred.
Excellent time management skills, self-discipline, and ability to work independently as well as part of a small team.
Experience with bookkeeping and financial management.
Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong attention to detail, syntax, and grammar; experience with social media, website maintenance and listservs preferred
Experience coordinating international schedules, logistics, events, and stakeholder communications
Experience with board administration, fundraising support, grants management/finance, and overseas is a plus

Salary Range and Location:
This is a fully remote position open to candidates anywhere in the United States. Travel once a year to the annual board meeting is expected. Salary range is ~$57-60K depending on experience for ¾ time (or approximately ~30 hours per week)
