MIDDLE EAST SCHOLARS GIVE ACADEMIC FREEDOM AWARD TO SAUDI SCHOLAR, WRITER AND WOMEN’S RIGHTS ADVOCATE, DR. HATOON AJWAD AL FASSI
(November 16, 2018, San Antonio, TX) The Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA) has awarded its 2018 Academic Freedom Award to Dr. Hatoon Ajwad Al Fassi, the Saudi scholar, writer, and women’s rights advocate.
MESA made the Academic Freedom Award presentation on November 16, 2018 at an awards ceremony held during its 52nd annual meeting, in San Antonio, Texas.
Laurie Brand, Chair of the Committee on Academic Freedom (CAF), on presenting the award, stated:
Dr. Al Fassi’s scholarship has focused primarily on the lives and status of women in the Arabian Peninsula. She was on the faculty of King Saud University for many years where she was promoted to Associate Professor, but beginning in 2001 she was not allowed to teach classes there and no explanation for this decision—or its source—was ever provided to her.
Outside of the academy, Dr. Al Fassi has been a tireless advocate for women’s rights. In Saudi Arabia, she led the campaign to include women in the Majilis al-Shura (Consultative Assembly) and was active in initiatives to allow and encourage women’s full participation in municipal elections.
Miriam Lowi, Chair of CAF’s Middle East and North Africa wing, accepted the award on behalf of Dr. Al Fassi, who has been in prison in Riyadh since June 21, 2018. The conditions of her detention are unknown. Professor Lowi stated in a written citation:
We are deeply saddened that Dr. Al Fassi cannot be with us today. She has been in prison in Riyadh since June 21; the conditions of her detention are unknown. We want to salute Hatoon for her enormous contributions: for her illuminating scholarship on the lives of women in the Arabian Peninsula; for her mentoring of young women and women scholars; for her reasoned insistence on the right to and need for diverse perspectives; for her commitment to justice. We are anxious for her release and her return to her family.

The Middle East Studies Association (MESA) is a non-profit learned society that brings together scholars, educators and those interested in the study of the region from all over the world. From its inception in 1966 with 50 founding members, MESA has increased its membership to more than 3,000 and now serves as an umbrella organization for more than sixty institutional members and thirty-nine affiliated organizations.
The Committee on Academic Freedom (CAF) seeks to foster the free exchange of knowledge as a human right and to inhibit infringements on that right by government restrictions on scholars. The United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights provide the principal standards by which human rights violations are identified today. Those rights include the right to education and work, freedom of movement and residence, and freedom of association and assembly.

رابطة دراسات الشرق الأوسط في أميركا الشمالية (ميسا) تمنح جائزة الحرية الأكاديمية للباحثة والكاتبة ومحامية حقوق الإنسان الدكتورة هتون أجواد الفاسي

منحت رابطة دراسات الشرق الأوسط في أميركا الشمالية (ميسا) جائزتها في الحرية الأكاديمية لعام ٢٠١٨ للدكتورة هتون أجواد الفاسي، الباحثة والكاتبة والمدافعة عن حقوق الإنسان السعودية.
وقدمت ميسا جائزة الحرية الأكاديمية في ١٦ تشرين الثاني ٢٠١٨ في احتفال خاص بتوزيع الجوائز أثناء اجتماعها السنوي الثاني والخمسين في سان أنطونيو بولاية تكساس. هذا وقد صرحت لوري براند، رئيسة لجنة الحرية الأكاديمية، لدى تقديم الجائزة:
ركزت الدكتورة الفاسي في دراساتها وأبحاثها بشكل رئيسي على حيوات ووضع النساء في شبه الجزيرة العربية، وكانت عضواً في هيئة التدريس في جامعة الملك سعود لسنوات كثيرة حيث رُقِّيتْ إلى أستاذ مشارك ولكن في بداية ٢٠٠١ مُنعت من التدريس في الجامعة ولم يُقدَّم حتى الآن أي تفسير لهذا القرار، أو مصدره.
خارج العالم الأكاديمي، كانت الدكتورة الفاسي مدافعة لا تكل عن حقوق النساء. وفي المملكة العربية السعودية قادت حملة لضم النساء إلى عضوية مجلس الشورى وكانت ناشطة في مبادرات تهدف إلى السماح للنساء وتشجيعهن على المشاركة في الانتخابات البلدية.
مريم لؤي، رئيسة جناح الشرق الأوسط وأميركا الشمالية في لجنة الحرية الأكاديمية استملت الجائزة عن الدكتورة الفاسي الموجودة في سجن في الرياض منذ ٢١حزيزان ٢٠١٨، والتي لا ما تزال أوضاع سجنها غير معروفة. وصرحت الأستاذة لؤي:
يحزننا كثيراً أن الدكتورة الفاسي لا تستطيع التواجد معنا اليوم، فهي مسجونة في الرياض منذ ٢١ حزيران، وأوضاع حجزها مجهولة. نريد أن نحيي هتون على إسهاماتها الضخمة: على أبحاثها التنويرية حول حيوات النساء في شبه الجزيرة العربية، وعلى رعايتها للفتيات الشابات والنساء الباحثات، وعلى إصرارها العقلاني على حق والحاجة إلى المنظورات المختلفة، وعلى التزامها بالعدالة. نحن متلهفون لإطلاق سراحها وعودتها إلى عائلتها.

إن ميسا هي رابطة غير ربحية تضم الباحثين والمعلمين والمهتمين بدراسة المنطقة من كل أنحاء العالم. ومنذ إطلاقها في ١٩٦٦ بوجود ٥٠ عضواً مؤسساً زادت ميسا من عضويتها إلى أكثر من ٣٠٠٠ عضو، والآن تخدم كمظلة لأكثر من ستين عضواً مؤسساتياً و٣٩ منظمة مرتبطة بها.

تنشد لجنة الحريات الأكاديمية أن تنشئ تبادلاً حراً للمعرفة كحق من حقوق الإنسان وأن تمنع انتهاك هذا الحق من قبل قيود الحكومات على الباحثين. إن علان الأمم المتحدة العالمي لحقوق الإنسان وميثاق الحقوق السياسية والمدنية وميثاق الحقوق الثقافية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية يقدم المعايير الرئيسية التي تُحدد من خلالها انتهاكات حقوق الإنسان اليوم. وهي تتضمن حق التعليم والعمل والحركة والسكن وحرية التجمع والانضمام إلى الجمعيات،
