We are pleased to announce to scholars and researchers interested in Arabic intellectual heritage, Islamic historiography, and medieval sources the establishment of a new research group entitled “Reconsidering the Historical Legacy of Ibn Khaldun.”
The group seeks to promote renewed and critical engagement with Ibn Khaldun’s historical writings, particularly Kitāb al-ʿIbar. While much scholarship has traditionally focused on the Muqaddimah, the group aims to broaden scholarly discussion by examining Ibn Khaldun’s wider contributions to historical writing, historiography, and the production of knowledge in the medieval Islamic world.
Its research interests include Ibn Khaldun’s historical methodology, textual criticism, manuscript studies, Islamic historiographical traditions, and the intellectual and cultural contexts in which historical texts were produced, transmitted, and interpreted.
Hosted by the University of Jordan, the group aims to develop an international and interdisciplinary research network connecting scholars working on Ibn Khaldun, Middle Eastern history, Islamic intellectual history, historiography, and manuscript cultures. The group welcomes collaboration, joint research initiatives, seminars, workshops, conference panels, and scholarly exchanges with researchers and institutions sharing related interests.
The group brings together researchers from Jordan, Belgium, Italy, and Japan who share a common interest in Ibn Khaldun’s intellectual and historical legacy. Further information about the group, its objectives, activities, and the biographical profiles of its members is available at:
