Assistant Professor in Comparative Politics/International Relations

University of Arkansas, Department of Political Science
Fayetteville, Arkansas | Start Date: August 16, 2027

The Department of Political Science in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Comparative Politics or International Relations, beginning August 2027. We seek candidates whose research and teaching focus on non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society actors.

We particularly encourage candidates with research and teaching interests in critical approaches to NGOs and civil society actors who study global humanitarian action, international crises, displacement, and post-conflict reconstruction. A geographical focus on the Middle East, North Africa, or the Mediterranean is required.

The successful candidate will offer undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise. The ability to complement offerings in the Department of Political Science and the Center for Middle East Studies by teaching courses on international NGOs, civil society actors, transnational networks, global humanitarian action, and reconstruction—especially as they pertain to contemporary political developments in the MENA region and Mediterranean—is desirable. The expected teaching load is two courses per semester.

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in Fulbright College’s multidisciplinary Democracy as a Public Good cluster hire, joining scholars working across disciplines on issues including humanitarian governance and civil society, democratic communication, immigration, public law, and other challenges facing democratic societies.

Minimum qualifications include:

Ph.D. in Political Science or a closely related field, with specialization in Comparative Politics and/or International Relations or related fields, conferred by August 2027;

Record of successful research and published work;

A well-defined and coherent research agenda that critically analyzes NGOs and civil society actors in the study of global humanitarian action, international crises, displacement, and post-conflict reconstruction;

Evidence of effective teaching and ability to teach undergraduate introductory courses; and

Regional focus on MENA or the Mediterranean.

Preferred qualifications include an active research agenda grounded in theory, particularly critical and interdisciplinary approaches; specialization in NGOs, civil society actors, transnational networks, and global humanitarianism in the context of crises, migration and displacement, and post-conflict reconstruction; experience teaching Comparative Politics and/or International Relations; a strong publication record; and demonstrated potential for external funding, scholarly engagement, and national and international recognition.

Completed applications received by October 10, 2026, will be assured full consideration. Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, research statement, teaching statement, evidence of teaching effectiveness, unofficial graduate transcripts, one published single-authored writing sample, and names of three academic references. Only finalists will be asked to submit letters of recommendation.
