North American Syriac Symposium

Vanderbilt University invites scholars and the public to participate in the 10th North American Syriac Symposium on June 27-July 1, 2027. The proposal deadline for papers and panels is November 15, 2026. Full information is at http://vu.edu/nass

Held every 4 years since 1991, the North American Syriac Symposium brings together scholars and students for exchange and discussion on a wide variety of topics related to the language, literature, and cultural history of Syriac, extending chronologically from the first centuries CE to the present day and geographically from the Middle East to South India, China, and the worldwide diaspora.

The theme for the tenth symposium is “The teaching and study of Syriac.” Accordingly, we particularly encourage participants to submit proposals which might be placed into panels on related themes such as the history of Syriac pedagogy, historiography of Syriac Christianity, the history of Syriac studies, or other reflections on the teaching and learning of Syriac by scholars ancient, medieval, or modern.

Keynote lectures on the conference theme will be given by Jeff Childers (Abilene Christian University), Jimmy Daccache (Yale University), Robin Darling-Young (Catholic University of America), George A. Kiraz (Institute for Advanced Study & Gorgias Press), Jeanne-Nicole Mellon Saint-Laurent (Marquette University), Jincy Othottil (St. Ephrem Ecumenical Research Institute), Adrian Pirtea (Austrian Academy of Sciences).

Inquiries may be directed to Prof. David Michelson, Vanderbilt University ([email protected])
